Group Lesson Plan - Reflection

1. Planning

Prior to excuting the group lesson plan, Ellen, Sue, and myself briefly touched base on the 16th on what we wanted to cover. This lead to us deciding we wanted to do some trigonometry so that we could demonstrate the hand trick. We then worked individually to develop the lesson plan over the weekend producing a well-organized draft.

However, we realized that this draft had too much content for the short 15 minute lesson. Further comments from Susan on our blog post gave us new insight on how to pursue the lesson plan as we felt better in assuming our learners (our fellow T.Cs) had some background knowledge. This lead us to develop a lesson plan around identifying trigonometric ratios of special angles in standard positition with the special triangles in mind.

2. Execution

What was really great about how lesson plan in theory was how well it was supposed to be interconnected and how much extra time we gave ourselves. This was a huge benefit despite some of our flaws in our presentation. Flaws that were apparent to me at the time was our finicky transitions between people. Additionally, our diagrams weren't always very clear and I think if we used a powerpoint that might have help tremendously. I did think that individually, Ellen, Sue, and myself explained things very clearly and I am grateful that they were in my group because I thought we worked so well together!

3. Addressing Comments

Reading the comments from our students, I think it was clear that we covered too much in such a short amount of time, something we were worried about. Although this is a downside, I think of this as an excellent learning opportunity and has reinforced my understanding of timings for the lesson. I also agree with Christa's comment regarding the unit circle. We had originally intended to cover this but chose to omit it to avoid confusion.
