Dear Mr. N - 10 Years later
Dear Mr. N,
My name is Tommy and I was a student in your Grade 11 Math class in 2021. Although, you are a great person and a good instructor, I didn't get much out of your class. I've never found use for what I learned in High school math especially that dreaded minus b plus minus square thing you taught us. I am now finishing school and have met another student you taught who had a very different experience from my own. What disappointed me was the fact that I never got anything out of your class but they did and this makes me feel less capable. What I'd like to know now is how I could change my attitude so that my future children can get more out of the subject than I did while I was in school.
Best,
Tommy

Dear Mr. N,
As I am now a full-fledged adult, I hope it is okay to call you Vincent instead of Mr. N. I wanted to write to you to express my gratitude for my experience as a student in your class 7 years ago. I am now finishing my graduate degree in Computer Science which I pursued because it was a great career choice and as I felt capable in the subject through my learning as a student in your class. I am also engaged to an amazing individual who I met while minoring in Math. I feel so deeply effected by your impact on my life that I want to invite you to our wedding which will be in May 1 year from now. I hope that you will be able to make it!
Sincerely,
Jessica

A hope I have as a teacher is that I inspire some students, especially female students, to pursue STEM subject areas as it is so important we have more representation in these fields. I also hope to inspire people of colour for this reason as well. However, I worry about leaving certain students behind and making them feel less capable or competent and am not sure how to remedy this in the classroom.

Well said and a very interesting read. (I like that your ‘detractor’ recognizes that the student has some responsibility for their own experiences in class.) Very happy that you are focused on equity in your teaching!
